Ink, Paint, and Watercolor with a Spooky Edge

Kelley M. Frank, with her company Morbid Smile Art, has been an Atlanta area vendor since 2018 at indoor and outdoor festivals, conventions, and events of all kinds.

Kelley M. Frank was the girl in her deep south school whose classmates thought she worshipped Satan because she read spooky and true crime books. Now she’s a horror artist, writer, poet, and photographer. She’s also neurodivergent, an asexual witch, a cat lady, a bone collector, and an outspoken advocate for the strange and unusual.

Kelley’s art veers toward the unsettling and creepy cute aesthetic, capturing her emotional states by fusing sequential art techniques and expressionist styles through a range of traditional and digital mediums including watercolor, ink, and acrylic. She is strongly influenced by her experiences growing up poor, asexual, and AFAB in the Deep South. He interest in her own neurodivergence and struggles with mental illness appear often in her work through recurring motifs such as eyes, skulls, moths, vines, flowers, snakes, occult symbolism, and aloof or angry female figures. Themes include existentialist dread, paranoia, and the outsider. Figures often appear frozen in mid-sentence or mid-thought, surrounded by swirling forces of life and death. Her art veers toward the unsettling, but never truly into utter despair. Her subjects are powerful, rising from the chaos to claim their place as their respective painting’s focal points. Notable pieces include her occult-flavored Priestess series, her detailed dinosaur illustrations, and her Witches’ Familiar series.

Kelley’s art has appeared in a number of books: interior art, lettering, covers, and/or promotional graphics for various books or series are all part of her wheelhouse. She’s done art for the following:

Zealot by C. Vonzale Lewis
Georgia Gothic: Stories from the Dark Side of the Deep South edited by Alex Hofelich, Vicki Greer, and Peter Adam Salomon
The Collectors by Marlena Frank
Southern Gothic edited by D.C. Phillips and William Sterling
The Mortician’s Secret and Other Haunting Tales by Kelley M. Frank
