Review: Child’s Play (2019)

“Are we having fun now, Andy?”

So you’ve seen Annabelle Comes Home (2019) and you’re sick of haunted dolls? Go see Child’s Play (2019) anyway because this re-imagining of Chucky is sure to delight. Born of a desire to rethink the character for modern audiences, Chucky now is fully connected to your WiFi, your smart home devices, self-driving cars, and knows your location. Chucky can learn your history, and he learns fast. It’s a smart new take on a classic horror icon.

If you’re not aware that I’m a huge Joker fan, you might find my interest in the voice actor for Chucky surprising. Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker, voice of The Joker) gives the character life in the way only he can, adding real conflict and sentiment, but also madness. He’s one of the most sought after voice actors in the industry for a reason, and it’s nice to see him step into the horror genre. He’s open about why he took the role, likening the reboot to a Greek tragedy. It’s definitely a new interpretation..
